Friends and correction for quiet time

Hey ya'll! It's me again (duh). It's been an insane week. I just got back from New York today. Man, am I tired. Anyways...

I was recently talking to my good friend Kinsey. We were talking about how hard it was to find good friends who will keep you accountable and strengthen your faith. Ones who don't care about what others think AT ALL and will stick with you. Ones who stop doing things that hurt you when you ask and don't get offended. I think about this and realized something. Not only have I not very many friends like this (I won't name who does and who doesn't do this so that ya'll won't know who I consider a real friend is.), I've been the worst example of a true friend. First off, I want to apologize for this. I know that I expect a lot from you guys. But I've wronged all my friends. I've been a terrible friend. I ask for forgiveness (yet, in the words of Jon Foreman, "Against You and You alone, have I sinned..."). I really have been a terrible friend. On the other hand, I think we need to rethink this whole friend thing. I really do believe that a good friend won't laugh at the choices you make. I've done some things that my friends laugh at me about. I really don't think they should be. That's not being a friend. I really think that friends should talk about the "awkward" stuff (the meaning and view of the word "awkward" is a completely different thought process; I'll discuss that later.). That's just my thoughts.

On a side note, I'm not saying that friends should do this because I've been wrong. I'm saying this because I haven't been doing most of this stuff (I do talk about awkward stuff; like earlier, my life is an open book.).

Finally, I misled everyone on the quiet time. I said it was possible to have a quiet time with a girl in your arms. I'm wrong. You have to have your mind solely focused on Him. Through music, Scripture, or thoughts. That's the only way to do it. Sorry for misleading you.

Anyways, questions, comments, thoughts, wishes, hopes, dreams, or forwards to my bank account, contact me via facebook or text.

    Later.

    Man Law

Hey guys. It's mwah again. So here I go...

I recently finished the book Wild At Heart by John Elderidge (sp?). Anyways, it basically told what he believed what true manhood is. For the most part, I would have to agree with what he says. So here's what I LEARNED (a big part to the Christian life. Learn everything you can about everything. I promise, if you go in looking to learn for enjoyment, it'll change your life. It changed mine.)

Manhood. When asked, most people would say ripped, stud, athlete, ladies man, rich, tough, not a wimp, etc. I disagree completely. That's not us at all. There are two things that I am convinced on what true manhood is. This is passion and a princess (or damsel in distress) to rescue. Here's my reasoning.

First off, there is passion. I know this guy. He couldn't hit the side of a barn with a golf ball if he was standing two feet away from it. He couldn't even hit the barn with the club. Yet he is a man. Here's why. He's not afraid to admit who he is. He's an amazing musician. He's insane at guitar and piano. I think this kid is awesome. He sure has taught me a lot. I know that for sure. But here is why I call him a man. His passion for music. His passion for the arts. His passion shows his dedication, his motives, his character. Just as an athlete shows his true character in the heat of battle (crunch time), this kid shows his true character through music. Granted, I don't always agree with him, but that's part of being apart of the human race. Anyways, so this is my very basic reasoning on passion.

The damsel in distress. Guys are in love with women. They are enticed. As much as we don't want to admit it, we are ENGULFED in thoughts of rescuing our damsels in distress. We love to be the big macho guy who comes down and swoops a girls heart away. This is what guys do. Hate to break it to ya girls, but guys like being told how awesome they are and how much they mean to the girl. We love it. We have this sense of good pride that we are bettering society and the heart of a woman. This is how we work. Every guy has an innate desire to want to lead a girl into life's troubles. (On a side note, this is why I think dating in high school is fine. Another blog entry for another day.) So I am 100% convinced that true manhood will be fighting for the heart of a woman.

Anyways, not as long as normal, but still good (I think, at least)

So, questions, comments, wishes, hopes, dreams, or money for the teacher, Facebook message or text. Later dudes.

    Thoughts on music and denominations

Hey guys. It's me again. Here some more of my thoughts...

I love music. While I will admit I have a very small iTunes music library (1400 songs), there are SO MANY songs and cds that I want to get. I listen to so much stuff. I listen from acoustic (Jon Foreman) to screamo (Underoath - I'm not a big fan of hardcore screamo. Underoath is soft screamo) to punk (Yellowcard) to love (Maroon 5 - listen to the lyrics on some stuff) to old stuff (Backstreet Boys) to REALLY OLD (ABBA). I love it all. I have my music I listen to in different moods. When I'm going crazy, it's Relient K. When I'm depressed, it's The Red Jumpsuit Apparatus. When I'm alone, it's Leeland and Mat Kearney. When I'm feeling spiritually down, it's some certain songs. When I'm feeling romantic, it's Jon Foreman (ask Kinsey. My best girl friend knows how crazily romantic I can get. It gets pretty funny how much of a romantic I can be [on a side note, for those of you wondering, any rumors you might have heard are NOT TRUE. Kinsey and I are just friends. I pull the romantic stuff just for fun. It's actually pretty hilarious, she tells me. I promise you there is nothing.])

Now here has been what I've been thinking about music. I hear a ton about the music I listen to. I don't listen to Led Zeppelin or the Beatles or Incubus. My favorite band is Relient K. First off, get over it. We all like something different. I personally can't stand country, but some people love it. In the words of Tenacious D, "You gotta believe, It's a matter of opinion..." Next, I think I figured out why I like Relient K so much. I have found it to be the perfect Christian view of music. Before you get angry and call me a legalist or say that I'm proud, let me say I'm not. I have done stuff much worst than most of you would think I would do, especially considering my high standards (If you wanna talk about these things, I prefer to discuss them in private. I'm willing to share with you what I did and how I got through the consequences, but I would prefer to meet with you in person.). Anyways, the perfect Christian view of music. Relient K does this so well. They have their distinctly Christian songs (Deathbed; When I Go Down). But they also have their, "Should a Christian artist be talking about love?" songs. For example, My Girls Ex-boyfriend. Talks about love. Faking My Own Suicide. Talks about love. Here is what they do. They worship God. But they worship what He has done. They see the beauty of His creation and they sing to Him about its beauty. That's the way to see music.

Now do I think we as Christians should watch what we listen to? Yep. If you look in my iTunes library, you will see that I don't have much rap in it. Rap is so demeaning to girls and society (It's also not really music. I'm allowed to say that because I am a musician. And no, because you sing in the Church choir, it does not make you a musician.). It also gets me in a mindset that I don't wanna be thinking in. Do I think that some Christians can listen to rap? Yep. This is saved for only the most mature Christians. They know how to recognize truth and lies. That's where so many Christians mess up in music. They don't listen to it with a thinking mind. As much as you deny it, music's reason it moves is because it makes you think. That's why you get moved by music.

Now here is what I've been taught about different denominations of Christianity. First, don't shove it in my face that your theology is right and mine is wrong. You can tell me why you believe what you believe, I'll return the favor, and then we can get into a formal debate from their. But don't just tell me that your right and I'm wrong. I promise you, I won't listen. Next, God has really been teaching me about the different ways of thinking this past year. 9th grade year was my learning how to think year. This year is my application year. I've seen that others don't agree with me. Because I'm at Bellevue and am there so much, it's nice to be told that others think different than I do. I often start to believe that everyone thinks exactly like me. That's not true. I often have to remind myself that that's not true. At Bellevue (don't get me wrong, I love the place. To me, the best church in Memphis, easily), everyone thinks the same. Because it is so big, you tend to think everyone thinks like that. So that's why I have to remind myself about differences so often.

Well, that's all I gots for tonight. As always, text or Facebook message if wanted. Later.

    The "Quiet Time"

Hey ya'll. It's me again. It's been awhile since the last time I blogged. Sorry. I've had some long days since the last post. So here we go for this weeks discussion: The Quiet Time!

"Johnny, did you do your quiet time?" "Sarah, did you read your Bible?" Most kids often here these words in reference to the famous quiet time. Asked what a quiet time is, I bet that most people would say either (1) reading the Bible and praying or (2) spending time with God (I wonder how many people who say this actually do this). I tend to say both. But I've been thinking. And I have come to the conclusion that a quiet time does not have to be reading Scripture or praying (WHATTTTT????). Don't worry, I say this with a clear conscience.

What is a quiet time? Here's the answer. Time spent in communion with the Lord. Most people say you have to read the Bible and pray. That's how you have communion with God. Wrong! It's not. To be honest, I find reading the Bible as a tedious task. I'm not saying that we never have to read Scripture on our own. I still think we should do it at least 3 or 4 times a week. But I'm saying it doesn't have to be a daily thing. Keep reading for those who are thinking they are getting out of a quiet time.

Communion with God. What is it? It's when we feel the presence of the Holy Spirit upon us. But how do we do this? Sometimes I best connect with the Lord through song. Sometimes its through thought. Sometimes it's just being still and waiting. Sometimes it's with a girl in my arms (with a girl in my quiet time...how can this be?)

I must confess. I have an inconsistent Bible reading quiet time. So most of you must wonder how I am filled with so much knowledge of the Bible (not trying to brag about how spiritual I am...if only you knew of some of the things I do). Let me say this. I am in communion with God everyday. It doesn't have to be through Scripture reading or prayer every day. Most of the time for me it's through song. I listen to some touching Christian music or I sing praises to my Daddy when I'm in my car alone. Sometimes I read the Bible. I always pray. But I found out how God spoke to me the most and PURSUED THAT WAY THE MOST. I love music. That's how God speaks to me.

So here's what I've been thinking about. How to have a quiet time.

Peace out. If needed, do the normal. Facebook message or text. Lata.
